Beyond Thread Count: The True Measure of Quality in Bedding

When looking for luxurious bedding, the common mantra is often "the higher the thread count, the better the quality." However, this belief does not paint a complete picture. Our comprehensive guide will reveal the true elements that define quality bedding. We will look at the importance of thread count, fiber quality, yarn count and the role of twisting in the manufacturing process.

Thread count

Often touted as the ultimate indicator of quality, thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Although a useful measurement, thread count alone does not guarantee superior quality. A high thread count alone does not guarantee the excellence of the bedding. This misunderstanding stems from neglecting other crucial aspects such as fiber quality and yarn count.

Fiber quality

The quality of the fiber is crucial to the overall feel and longevity of the bedding. Our collection uses extra-long staple Egyptian cotton, known for its 35-38mm fiber length, which is significantly longer than the fibers in standard cotton varieties. This length helps create a smoother, stronger and shinier bedding that sets a higher standard of comfort and durability. In contrast, shorter fibers, typically less than 28mm, are common in lower quality bedding and result in a rougher texture and reduced strength.

Yarn count (NM value)

The NM value, also known as the "number metric" in the length numbering system, indicates the length to mass ratio of a yarn and describes its fineness. A high NM value means a finer yarn, as more yards of yarn weigh just one gram. For example, an NM value of 12 means that 12 meters of yarn weighs 1 gram. Therefore, a Nm 12 thread is three times thinner than a Nm 4 thread. Our bed linen has a yarn count of 130/1, which means extreme fineness and softness, compared to the standard of 60/1 or 80/1 found in the Most bed linen is used. This higher yarn count results in bed linen that is not only softer but also more durable and luxurious, showing that the NM value of the yarn is just as important as the thread count.

twisting

Twisting in the manufacturing process refers to twisting two or more yarns to create a twist. The fineness of twisting in the Nm system is determined by the number of the individual yarns and the number of twisted threads. For example, a thread Nm 48/2 would be made from two yarns, each with an Nm value of 48, twisted together. Some manufacturers claim high thread counts, such as 1000, by using lower quality cotton and a yarn count of 60/3. You achieve this increased count by twisting.

However, twisting can be beneficial if done correctly. Luxury brands like Frette use twisting with finer yarns in some products to improve durability and softness, resulting in superior bedding. In contrast, twisting thicker yarns results in a coarser, heavier fabric. The key is in the yarn count: fine yarns retain their softness and quality when twisted, in contrast to thicker yarns.
